Depart Nairobi at 07:00 hrs and transfer to Nanyuki, approximately 3½ hours away. Here, meet your trekking crew, pick up supplies, and get briefed about the trek. Continue to Sirimon Gate (2,650m), where a picnic lunch is served while completing park formalities. The hike to Old Moses Camp covers 9 km through lush rainforest and bamboo zones, offering your first glimpse of Mount Kenya’s stunning scenery. Along the trail, spot birds and wildlife like monkeys and bushbucks. Overnight in dormitory-style bunkhouses with dinner served at camp.
After breakfast, the trek continues through the iconic Mackinder Valley, surrounded by steep ridges and moss-covered rocks. Elevation gain is around 1,000 meters, providing a challenging but rewarding hike. Along the way, admire giant lobelias and other high-altitude flora unique to Mount Kenya. Lunch is served en route. Arrive at Shipton’s Camp, one of the most scenic camps on the mountain, set in a panoramic valley with views of glaciers and high-altitude tarns. Dinner and overnight at Shipton’s Camp.
Acclimatization is critical at high altitudes. Explore nearby cols and ridges to help your body adjust, practicing the principle of “climb high, sleep low”. Take short hikes around the camp to spot wildlife like mountain hyraxes and enjoy the crisp mountain air. Use this day to rest and prepare for the summit ascent. Overnight stay at Shipton’s Camp.
Wake up early at 02:00 hrs for the summit push. Hike under the stars and reach Point Lenana around sunrise (~06:30 hrs) for breathtaking views over Mount Kenya’s glaciated peaks and valleys below. Capture photos at this unforgettable vantage point. Descend via the Western route through School Hut (Top Hut, 4,500m), Two Tarn, and Oblong Tarn, enjoying scenic alpine lakes and ridges along the way. Return to Shipton’s Camp for dinner and rest.
Begin the descent by crossing Simba Col, descending gradually to Halls Tarn (Mintos Hut). The route offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, valleys, and glaciers. Lunch is served en route. Continue hiking down to Bandas, where hot showers, dinner, and overnight accommodations await. This day allows trekkers to relax after several days of high-altitude trekking.
After breakfast, hike downhill through rainforest and bamboo zones to meet Land Rovers at the trailhead. Transfer to Chogoria Market, where you can shop for souvenirs and bid farewell to your crew. Drive back to Nairobi, completing the adventure. Reflect on the incredible landscapes, wildlife encounters, and cultural experiences from your trek.
